RV Buying Guide

Owning a recreational vehicle (RV) allows you access to the full breadth of the great outdoors. RVs make camping comfortable, convenient and secure, and you can even take them into the city or to visit relatives and friends in other states. Of all the various modes of travel out there, an RV is hard to beat in terms of affordability and comfort. You can surround yourself with all the things you need to feel like you’re at home on the road when you own an RV.

However, shopping for an RV can present a challenge because there are so many different models available on the market. Bourbon RV is your Missouri RV dealer. Here are our recommendations for things you should take into consideration when shopping for the perfect RV.

1. Establish a Budget

First, you’ll need to figure out just how much you can afford to spend on your RV. You can’t just think about the sticker price of the RV, either. Additional costs come into play, such as maintenance, upkeep, storage needs, insurance, campground fees and accessories like water-tank hoses or safety gear.

Set a price point that you can afford so that you can get a good-quality RV without breaking the bank. Doing some research online can help you to arrive at a figure by letting you know what common RV prices are for different makes and models. Remember that you can also look into used options as well as financing if you need assistance with your purchase.

2. Select a Type

RVs don’t just come in one format. There are towable RVs which require the use of a towing vehicle to haul them from place to place, and there are motorhomes, which are self-contained RVs that have their own engine and driving cab. Within each of these broad categories are several more categories. You’ll want to think about whether you prefer to tow or drive your RV and which style you prefer. Do you want a large bus-like motorhome or a tiny teardrop trailer?

3. Consider Your Camping Style

Next, you’ll want to think about how you like to camp. Are you more of a bare-bones minimalist or do you like to have all the creature comforts of home at your disposal? Some RVs are more suited to the rugged adventurer who needs nothing more than a bed, a sink and a place to store some items, while others are hard to distinguish from a very nice residential home.

Bear in mind that the more amenities and features you want, the higher the final cost of your RV will be. If your budget has room for it, then this isn’t an issue, but you may need to scale back some of your expectations if you don’t have a lot of wiggle room in your funding.

4. Think About Size

Are you traveling by yourself or taking along the whole extended family on an epic adventure? Solo travelers and couples can get by with a pretty small and compact RV, but families are going to require more living space and more sleeping berths to be comfortable on the road. The size of your RV will vary depending on how many beds and how much room you need. Make sure you don’t skimp too much on size or your family won’t be very happy while you’re traveling!
