Do-It-Yourself RV Maintenance

Keeping up with RV maintenance will help extend the camper’s lifespan and maximize its performance. The following DIY projects can be a great place to start!

Run Your Generator

During the camping seasons, you’re probably using your RV often enough that your generator is staying healthy. But the longer it sits in storage, the more likely some of your internal mechanisms are going to start to break down. Consider what happens if you own a motorhome that contains gasoline. You have about 30 days before it starts to become corrosive.

No matter what kind of fuel your generator uses, the best way to keep it fresh is to periodically run it, especially if you’re leaving it in storage for an extended period of time. This is particularly important because cleaning a generator is incredibly difficult and usually leads to total replacement anyway.

Lubricate Your Slide Out Rails

While it’s easy to take for granted well-oiled slide out and awning rails, letting them go uncared for can lead to grinding and, worst case scenario, getting stuck. Make sure you’re taking the time to keep these rails well lubricated with dry slide out lubricant.

You can even go a step further and oil the hinges and locks on your door. Your wheel bearings will also need lubrication, but this can be more complicated, so we suggest you take it to a professional to look at it.

Maintain your Seals

If one of your seals is damaged or worn, even a light shower can lead to interior damage if there’s nothing stopping the water from leaking in. It’s important to make sure all your seals are properly maintained so you never get surprised with water damage.

As you clean your RV (which you should do so regularly), check each seal to make sure it’s still in working condition and there are no gaps or weak points. This will include seals around seams and in corners as well as along the windows. If you do find a small hole, patch it up with silicone sealant.
